NTI-tss Appliance for Migraines and Jaw Clenching

Got migraines? Grinding your teeth at night?  The NTI-tss Plus appliance — a type of mouthguard — can help. The NTI-tss Plus appliance is a tension suppression system, which simply means it prevents the clenching action. No clenching means less wear and tear to your teeth, less jaw pain and even fewer migraines.

Teeth clenching and bruxism (also known as teeth grinding) can do serious damage to your teeth over time. When you grind, you slowly wear down the involved teeth, which can lead to broken teeth, a chipped tooth filling, shortened lifespan of a dental crown, and even tooth loss.

You may not realize you have bruxism, since teeth grinding is most commonly something you do while you sleep. Some signs to watch for include:

  • Chronic tension-type headaches
  • Earaches
  • Grinding that’s loud enough to wake your sleeping partner
  • Repetitive clenching of the jaw
  • A sore, painful jaw or TMJ
  • Excessive wear to tooth surface

NTI-tss® – A Different Kind of Guard

The NTI-tss Plus appliance is an innovative solution to treat bruxism. While a night guard protects your teeth from grinding while you sleep, it does not actually stop the clenching behavior. In fact, a night guard can make it worse. The NTI-tss Plus appliance is designed to stop teeth grinding. If you’ve ever accidentally bitten down on something hard with your front teeth, you probably opened your mouth right away. This natural reflex, called the “nociceptive trigeminal inhibitory” (NTI) reflex, to open our mouths when we bite down on something hard with our front teeth is what the NTI-tss Plus appliance takes advantage of.

The NTI-tss Plus appliance is an acrylic guard, custom fit to be worn on either the upper or lower front teeth while you sleep. If you begin to clench your teeth, you bite down on the guard, activating the reflex and stopping the clenching before it starts.
